OUR SPEAKERS

Artem is a private equity professional with broad operational experience in emerging and developed markets. Artem spent most of his career with Renaissance Partners – the principal investments arm of Renaissance Group. Prior to that Artem worked as an analyst in the infrastructure joint venture between Renaissance Capital and Macquarie Group. Artem holds an Honours Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and an Honours Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Kushil Maharaj holds a BSc Eng (Civil) and MBA degree with extensive experience in real estate structuring and development, infrastructure development and construction management. In 2011 Kushil re- joined Group Five from Absa (Barclays Africa) where he was the Head of Absa Development Company.  Prior to joining Absa, Kushil was employed by Group Five in various roles within the Construction, and Investments and Concessions clusters respectively.
He currently is the Managing Director of G5 Properties. Under his leadership G5 Properties has progressively expanded its portfolio of assets and aggressively grown its Africa project pipeline. In South Africa he has been instrumental in securing more than 10 000 residential units for development. 

Bolaji Edu is the Chief Executive Office of Broll Property Services Ltd joining in September 2014.  Broll is the leading multi-disciplinary firm in Nigeria with services including, Investment and Broking, Corporate Real Estate Services, Research, Retail leasing and Advisory, Retail Mall Management and Facilities Management. Bolaji is directly responsible for investment advisory involving the disposal and acquisition of real estate assets. At Broll Bolaji has worked with clients including Tishman Speyer, African Capital Alliance, Old Mutual, Argentil, Actis, Shell and more.

Hafeez Giwa is a Managing Partner of HC Capital Properties and is based in London. Prior to HC Capital Properties, Hafeez was an Investment Principal in the London office of Actis – Africa Real Estate; where he focused on West African real estate investment opportunities exceeding an aggregate value of USD$650MM.  Before joining Actis, he worked in the real estate investment banking and principal investing divisions of Morgan Stanley in New York and London.  Hafeez holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School and a BA in Finance (with honours) from Howard University; where he was a Morgan Stanley – Richard B. Fisher Scholar.

JD Diabira is currently the CEO of Westbridge Mortgage REIT, a regulated Canadian lender focused on credit to real estate developers and on mortgage trading and securitization. Mr. Diabira has previously founded and ran Riskmont Inc., an institutional loans trading group for 12 years before selling the firm. A veteran of the Canadian credit risk market, he has been a vice president with Bank of America’s quantitative credit risk group, a lender with Royal Bank of Canada as well as a Federal Bank regulator. Mr. Diabira started his banking career as a treasury desk trader with the Manitoba Government treasury office. Mr. Diabira attended the University of Manitoba on a full scholarship and graduated with B.A. Economics before pursuing his graduate degree (M.Sc. Economics) at Universite de Sherbrooke in Quebec. Mr. Diabira has consulted with various African lenders and government agencies on ways and means to develop local mortgage markets on the Continent.

Mr Shah is partner at Helios Investment Partners where he focuses on credit investments. He joined Helios in 2008, and over the last 9 years has invested in credit, growth equity and buyout opportunities across Africa. Prior to joining Helios, Mr Shah was a Director within the Financial Sponsors Group at Lehman Brothers in London. His experience there spanned M&A advisory, leveraged finance and equity capital markets. Mr Shah started his career as a strategy consultant at Arthur D Little. He sits on the Board of Directors of Shell & Vivo Lubricants B.V. Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, he completed his high school education at Eton College in the UK; he has an MA in Economics and Management from Oxford University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr Shah, a Kenyan and British national, speaks Swahili, Gujarati and Hindi.

Faisal joined Cluttons in 2010 as a residential analyst and is now Cluttons’ global Head of Research. He is based in London and oversees Cluttons’ annual research programme, with a particular focus on thought leadership research. Cluttons is headquartered in the UK and is the world’s oldest chartered surveying and property services firm and celebrated its 250th anniversary last year. Faisal’s expertise lies in researching and analysing real estate markets, with a focus on the UK, the Middle East and Nigeria. His work focuses on all sectors, examining broader economic drivers that underpin global real estate activity. Most recently, his team has undertaken research to understand the property investment intentions and behaviour of high net worth individuals from across the Middle East . Having grown up and worked in Dubai previously, he has an intimate understanding of the market dynamics across the Middle East region. He also has six years’ experience in the London property market.

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, David leads Momentum’s frontier Africa real estate investment management business. Before joining Momentum’s Africa team in December 2012, David spent six years in Momentum’s Alternative Strategies team. Prior to joining Momentum, David was a Vice President at Maples Finance Limited in the Cayman Islands where he provided fiduciary services to a portfolio of hedge funds, trusts and private equity vehicles. David previously worked as an Account Manager at Fortis Prime Fund Solutions (Cayman) Limited and at Schroder Investment Management, RBS and ING Barings in London. He completed his accounting training at Ernst & Young in South Africa and is a qualified South African Chartered Accountant and a CFA Charterholder.
